Geckos Etc. Latest News:
12/31/09 - The US Association of Reptile Keepers has launched a letter writing campaign to stop Senate Bill S373 that would ban transport of nine species of snakes. Follow this link for instructions on how to write to your senators: http://www.kill-s373.com/
Happy holidays to everyone, and Happy New Year! We had a full house of guests at our house for Christmas with both my family and Deb's family visiting us from the east coast. Now that Christmas is over I am working on taking photos now for the next website update. I should have new geckos posted early next week. |
12/21/09 - The Senate Bill that will ban nine python, boa, and anaconda species has passed out of comittee and will be going to the Senate floor for a full vote. Now is the time to call your senator to voice your concerns about this bill. The Humane Society is opposed to keeping of any exotic animals as pets, and is pushing this bill forward. As written this bill would prevent the interstate transport of any of the nine big snakes that are listed in the bill, and shipping these species across state lines would be a felony. If you keep a Boa constrictor as a pet, and move to a different state you could not take your pet with you! This bill is another step in their attempts to dismantle the reptile industry in the United States, and even if you don't keep any of these species you need to take action to preserve our hobby and industry as a whole. Preserve your rights to keep these species, for you, and future generations! Take a look at the video below and take action!

12/20/09 - Our son Andrew is will be two weeks old tomorrow and is doing well. Deb is a zombie with the feedings every 2-3 hours around the clock, but Andrew is healthy and gaining weight well. We are looking forward to teaching Andrew all about animals and nature and sharing our passion with him. I'm sure many of you will see him crawling around at reptile shows in the future! Here are some photos of him and us.

12/7/09 - Our baby was born today at 1:00 PM Pacific Time! It was a very hard birth for Deb and it took her 35 hours to get him out. Just about everything that could have gone wrong medically did, but in the end it all worked out and he is healthy (and cute!). Mom and Baby (and Dad) are all fine. It was a boy, and his name is Andrew Jack Sykes. He is 6 pounds, 9 ounces, and 20 inches long. I have gotten about an hour sleep in the last 2 days, so I will post some photos when I am able.
I am behind on answering emails and calls, but I should be answer all of those tomorrow. |
| 12/2/09 - I am working on an update now, and some of the new geckos have already been posted. In total there are 124 new geckos in this update. I will post a list of the morphs added once I have finished posting them all. |
12/1/09 - Some scary stuff is going on in Congress right now. There is a bill in a Senate subcommittee now that as written would ban all species of pythons. Please check out the link below and take action! Please call, email, and fax all the members of the Senate subcommittee on Water and Wildlife. The Humane Society and other groups are working to dismantle the reptile industry and take away our rights to keep reptiles, and there have been a lot of threats coming our way recently. If we don't show that we care and have a voice now, Congress may think this is an easy one and ban all pythons. I currently don't keep any pythons, but if they were to ban pythons, who is to say they won't try ban all geckos next? These groups already tried to push a bill that would ban all non-native species in the US (HR 669). Banning pythons is a first step, and could lead to the banning of other types of animals in the future. Even gecko keepers need to fight for the right to keep pythons, or our geckos may be next! Please take some time to voice your concerns to this bill! The hearing is December 3, so call soon!

It has been very busy around here. Many people know that Deb is pregnant, and the baby is due in one week (November 29)! Nine months have gone by very quickly. Deb is doing well and so far has had a very smooth pregnancy. Soon we will see the little one and welcome him home. I will post updates here when the baby is born. Deb has been keeping me busy with various projects around the house (fix this, clean this, etc.). Her "nesting" instinct is running strong now! I am just finishing painting in the baby's room. I never knew what a pain painting can be, but it has taken a week to get the room painted! I just have a little more touch up work to do and then clean up. That should be finished tomorrow.
I had a great time on Reptile Radio earlier this month. If you missed it here is the direct link to the show: Link I was discussing the 2009 season, plans for the 2010 season, morphs, care tips, etc. |

It took me longer to take these photos because I pulled a muscle in my back. It is amazing how one little pulled muscle quickly turns you into a feeble old man! Anyway, my back is much better now, and I am already working on taking photos for the next website update. We have lots of great 2009 hatched geckos growing up now that will be available soon. Let me know if you are looking for anything in particular and I will look for it while taking photos.
Check out this Super Hypo Tangerine that we hatched this year. Red Head!

We just had 8 good looking eggs laid by one of our Mexican Beaded Lizards. This is an especially colorful female, so I am really excited to see these babies. Unfortunately I'll have to wait until February for them to hatch! Good things take time...

Everything is going very well here. We have been busy as usual for this time of the year with lots of eggs being laid and lots of new hatchlings. Our leopard gecko projects are doing great. The first of Godzilla's babies hatched this week, and we have also hatched a couple more Blazing Bell Albinos. Those are two projects that we are especially excited about. And, if all goes well with certain projects we should have a couple new morphs to release later this year (sorry no hints!). :)
At this point it looks like we will have a great year with our knobtail gecko projects as well. So far we have hatched a bunch of Nephrurus levis and wheeleri, and our first two Nephrurus amyae of the year hatched today. Hopefully we will also have some Nephrurus deleani hatching later this year. At this point it looks this year will be our best for producing Nephrurus amyae. Our bloodline of amyae has proven to be very prolific!
We also hatched our first Western Hognose Snakes. Here are some photos of the first hatchling:

l should also mention our newest breeding project...Deb is pregnant! The baby is due on November 29, and this will be our first child. So far we don't know if it is a boy or girl, but we will hopefully find out next week. I'm hoping for a boy, so I have turned up the thermostat in the house to 90 degrees F (32 C). :)

Our breeders have been having a productive start to the season and we have collected a lot of eggs. Our hatching season is just starting. So far the first to hatch were some really colorful enigmas from one of our enigma projects. I also hatched the first baby from our Blazing Bell female. I bred her to a male snow blizzard 100% het bell. The first baby to hatch...a snow blizzard 100% het bell. Oh well, my blazing bell will hopefully be coming in the next clutch! :)
Godzilla has been cooled for the last 2 months, but he is warmed up now and has started breeding. We are hoping for BIG things from him! It is so strange to see him in a box with females that weigh nearly 1/3 of his weight (170 gram Godzilla and 60 gram Tremper Sunglow females). So far he is getting along just fine with the smaller females. |
3/16/09 - I am back home from my trip to the Hamm show in Germany. Thanks to everyone that purchased geckos from us! I had a great time as usual, and it was nice to see all our friends there again.

|
2/4/09 - In the summer time when we are busy with shows and babies hatching like crazy, I think "I can't wait until things slow down in the winter". That just isn't the case! I don't think there is ever a slow time when you are managing lots of reptiles. This time of year we are busy with setting up breeding groups, taking photos, emails, and updating the website. I think maybe the slowest time of the year is the late spring when the breeders are set up and laying eggs but the flood of babies hasn't started yet. Oh well, at least I enjoy my work!
I added some new geckos yesterday, and more new ones will be added today. In total there will be 77 new ones in this update.
This year has been unbelievably cold, and I have had to hold off shipping most orders in January and this first week of February. It looks like next week the weather in the US will finally warm up at the UPS hubs, so I should be able to get all the orders shipped this next week. We have some exciting news:
Introducing GODZILLA!
.
Godzilla is the new record for the largest leopard gecko in the world. He is a super giant that we hatched from the Tremper Giant bloodline. He is the grandson of Moose (one of the largest Giants). We hatched this guy from one of our giant groups on 5/20/07, so he is only 20 months old. He is currently 170 grams, and 11 and 5/8 inches long (29.52 cm). He hasn't been bred yet, but we hope to offer a limited number of Godzilla Giants for sale in 2009.

I didn't get everything I wanted in this update but I will be taking more photos and adding more geckos to the available pages soon. |
1/17/09 - Happy New Year everyone!
I was planning on adding new geckos to my available pages last week, but I was sick with a bad sinus infection. I am feeling better now, and will be adding new geckos to my website starting in the next day or two. So far I have over 70 geckos to add to the available pages, and will continue taking more photos this week as well. Please let me know if you are looking for anything in particular and I will look to see if I have it available. |
